Aging is characterized by genomic instability that may lead to cancer and alterations in body cell mass. Aging is
also characterized by a metabolic decline exemplified by a decrease in the GH/IGF-1 axis and insulin resistance.
This symposium will focus on these abnormalities and will try to link them in several ways. First, genetic modulation
of genome maintenance leads to a premature aging phenotype and to a metabolic adaptation in the GH/IGF-1
axis. Second, longevity in model organisms has been linked to a dampening of the insulin/IGF-1 pathway, and
this has now also been shown for human centenarians. Third, sirtuins have a role as a genetic switch between normal
metabolism and enhanced genome protection. Lastly the novel mitochondrial peptide humanin has appeared
as a potential key player in the general response to stress through its anti-apoptotic and metabolic actions.
This one-day conference will focus on the intersection between aging, genome maintenance and metabolism.
